We can only look for what we understand. Such as em, radio waves, etc. If they don't use something akin to what our technology is, we can't detect them.
Also all of this has a huge limitation, such as speed of light, so the information to arrive inherently might take longer than they'd be able to exist.
In the end it's useless and serves only for mental masturbation.
It's like looking for a single specific grain of sand in our entire galaxy. Gl with that.

If an advanced alien race had the means to reach our planet then they would just consider us to be primitive creatures, just like we think when we see bugs and other vermin.
