Even if you pay a 2x premium on everything including housing it's still much cheaper than the US by more than tenfold for the same stuff.

Which parts of Portugal are affordable? I was trying to learn Portuguese a while back and might give it another try if it's under 1000 month for a small apartment or something like that, or cheap AirBNB-ing there or something. That or some more "2nd world" European places.
