Relevant orthodontic background
My orthodontic health has been relatively good throughout my early adolescence in terms of malocclusions compared to the numerous amount of peers I am surrounded by in secondary school. My bite and teeth alignment was great for someone who has had no orthodontic interventions.
My oral health was not the greatest during my late primary school days though as I did not understand the importance of keeping up with a healthy oral hygienic regiment. I had to get my left and right second mandibular molar removed as a result of deep cavities residing within them around that time as well. Future me would have preferred to keep those teeth but we were very financially limited at the time so it was not of an option.
For a few months during my Sophomore year of high school I had a habit of keeping hard rock candy in my right cheek. This I suspect is the main reason as to why I’m even here thinking about this right now. The habit had left me with essentially a localized malocclusion in and only in the area where the rock candy had once resided for the period of months. The dental alignment of my left side where I did not prefer to keep rock candy is phenomenally good in comparison, even though the wisdom tooth had begun to come through on that side as well.
Why I’m doing this
Short answer:
It is because I am poor. Nobody with expendable income would willingly do this to themselves over paying a professional in the field.
Long answer:
It is because I am poor, but also the fact that it would be an understatement to say that I am obsessed with increasing my maxillofacial aesthetics. There are no surface level life quality degradations of me having to live with a slight malocclusion on only one side of my face. I am able to enjoy all the amenities that comes with having, well, functional teeth.
I have mild masseter asymmetry as a result of the uneven allocation of forces when chewing. The reason why the level is only mild is because I am purposely limiting myself in the amount of hard substances I chew on because of the asymmetry, as doing so would make it worse. Adding on to the fact that the teeth enamel on my right side wears significantly more compared to my left side due to the misalignment of bite. I am also limited from having optimal tongue posture due to the crowding on the right side of my palate.
Due to these combination of factors I am limited from achieving my genetic potential in terms of maxillofacial aesthetics, this is most noticeable when viewing my side profiles.
I am also hoping to achieve a forward projection of the mandible as a result of the lateral maxillary and mandibular arch expansion due to the arch wires, which reduces the arch length. The idea is that the maxillary set of teeth moves forward a bit while the mandibular set moves backward. A few millimeters would make a great difference.
This could be derived even further to say that I would not be here if it wasn’t for the Eurocentric nature of objective beauty standards. I would do well among the people of the mongoloid descent, but I live among those of the caucasoid ancestry.
Equipment:
Ormco Damon Q self ligating brackets
Bracket positioning gauge
Standard nickel titanium arch wires
Bracket bonding kit which includes primer, etching gel, and adhesive gel
Composite resin curing light
Spool of open coil spring
Everything mentioned above is of the orthodontic grade, either supplied from Amazon or eBay.
Plan:
I will be installing self ligating braces on my teeth in an effort to achieve an improvement in facial aesthetics.
The vertical placement of the brackets will be done with the placement gauge following standard measurement and the lateral placement will be done by eye.
Concerns:
Although the procedural steps seem very easy, I will be treading carefully as my face depends on it. Self ligating brackets pose to be far easier to handle and maintain than conventional elastomeric brackets as it has fewer components, leading to more efficient transfer of bio mechanic results from the arch wires.
My main concern would be the potential need for elastics in closing and refining the bite during the final stages of refinement, as this could prove to be tedious in this process. The use of elastics could be mitigated or eliminated all together by attempting to perfect the initial bracket placements as this factor is what leads orthodontists to creating and using stainless steel arch wires during the appointments following the initial installation.
I am currently waiting for my arch wires to arrive and will post an update with pictures once they do arrive and I have successfully installed the brackets.
