M(17) I’ve had braces for 6+ months with 14 months left and at the start of this month they gave me bands to use but I’m not sure if I should continue using them as I’ve heard they can cause jaw recession which I clearly don’t want so should I ignore the dentist and continue to mew or use bands +mew? I’ve yet to ask my dentist how the braces will affect my teeth and jaw development as I only agreed to pay for them because my mom suggested lol but I plan on doing so once I go again at the start of June along with info on my palate as i want to see how wide it is.Any help is appreciated

Braces are sometimes actually used to fix mild jaw recessions, if you're already recessed braces won't really make that worse than it already is. At 17 though a jaw recession can't be fixed through braces, so surgery it is.

Get braces anyway, having bad teeth and a recessed jaw is objectively worse than just having a recessed jaw.

If you’ve been given bands they’re likely trying to correct overbite or underbite and that is the single most important thing braces do. Bands will give you infinitely more progress than mewing will because you can’t mew 24 hrs a day. Keep them on they’ll improve your jaw

if u have an overbite, it usually means ur recessed. make sure u use those rubber bands, i used them and it pulled my lower jaw forward
