Im going to university for criminology after 4 years i have 2 options

1. Going to law school for an extra 3 years and becoming a lawyer at 24

2.Or becoming a police officer and becoming a detective after 4-5 years. so around 25-26

Detetives have an average salary of 130k in canada. And lawyers have an average of 110k income

but i feel like if im a good lawyer, i would get paid more than if i was an equally good detective

like a top 10% skill lawyer probably makes more than a top 10% detective.

my dad is a lawyer and he also worked for the police, so i have some connections in both

what are your thoughts? any law enforcement dudes here?

detectives earn more on average. and the benefits are better too. Also the job is easier

lawyers i think make more only if they're really good at their job

so the increments of salary increase is higher for a lawyer then a detective

That number of 110k is so off. It takes into accounts the lawyers who went to small law schools, then went on to work in small practices in plazas settling minor disputes. If your GPA is at least 3.7 and you get a 165+ LSAT then go to UBC, McGill, or UofT law school because these guys rake in stupid money. I have a cousin who graduated #1 in their class at UofT law school and then went on to work at a Bay Street firm (Canada's Wall Street). Hes in his early 30s and heavily implied one time he makes around 300k a year CAD.

yeah i suspected that, the number sounded weird

what are the odds of becoming a bad lawyer?

and do firms care too much about what school you go to?

Yes they do. A lot. And the odds of you becoming a bad lawyer is low considering its mainly tedious work and pages of reading, the odds of you becoming excruciatingly bored/unsatisfied/depressed from the work is high.

Detectives get early retirement.

You can't be what you want to be in life. It's all pre determined from birth.

Hardwork is important but only for those with potential in a particular industry that provides a good return on investment.

The thing is that you cannot be what you want to be in life.

IQ is an important factor and cannot be ignored. Jordan Peterson even stated that IQ is needed to deal with the complexity of each job. He put IQ requirements for each job and becoming a lawyer would require an IQ no less than 115.

If you have an average IQ then you will have to work a lot harder then someone who is more intelligent especially in that particular field.

Corp lawyer not even close
