Now it doesnt have the best story, it doesnt have the best characters, or weapons, or cities.

But there is something mystical about Skyrim. It is the most atmospheric, get-yourself-lost-in type game out there. Even in 2023.

My theory is that it has something to do with the time in which it came out. There are people who say this regardless of age or experience with video games. Kids that pick it up now get lost in it the same way I did back in 2011.

I think that 2011 was the last year that you could look around and say 'you know, this ain't too bad' for the average person despite the 2008 crash.

2012 and the hype around the mayan calendar was after that, and throughout that whole year, I think people were losing themselves into skyrim as if to say:

'this may or may not be my last year. It might be a joke, ('memes' hadnt been invented yet, only ragecomics and 'one does not simply walk into mordor' archaic memes) but it might also be true'.

After 2012 it all went down hill. Vine was invented in 2013, the prologue to Tiktok and instant videos. You had 3 years of that and then Harambe the gorilla was killed. The worlds first international meme which shook the world and prepared the stage for the trump era of instant media and memes everywhere.

Now here we are in 2023, and there are people still harping on about a video game that came out in 2011. Weird...

Almost as if that game signified the end of an era, almost as if that game signified a transition in the last decently sized (population wise) youth group in the western world, almost as if that game was the setting sun to an entire era, an entire civilisation.

Best 'video game' of all time? Debatable.

Most influential 'video game' of all time? Absolutely.

Overrated compared to other video game mechanics and stuff yes. Completley agree. It doesnt hold a candle to morrowind, medal of honour 1, destroy all humans 1, oblivion even.

But it has magic that no other game has. Just listen to the soundtrack:

It's fun if you had a ton of mods to fuck around with. But, unfortunately; the game also turned against me.

So I played skyrim in early 2012 and as a 14 year old I really liked it.
Last year I reinstalled but I was bored out and only played one day.
It hits different as an adult and there are far better games out there.

The dragonborn was nerfed in the game. In the lore he can even fight daedra

I could never get into skyrim. I love fallout tho. I think I just hate the setting of skyrim. I don't wanna play as some random la creatura or some nordcuck

brings back memories , I too played it as a 15 yo back in 2012
didn't like it that much , some puzzles were too hard , some enemies very hard to kill ( spammed kill all)
what was your character ? I chose khaljit ,but should have taken dark elf since I relied on magika all the time

Only games that managed to create a similar depth for me was Fallout: New Vegas, Kenshi, and Disco Elysium.

Why Kenshi?

What about older games like Baldurs Gate?

Eh I prefer the Og deus ex, fallout games and Batman games than that shit

Why Kenshi?
I just really enjoyed the atmosphere in that game. World design, sound design, music, architecture, cultural designs of clothes and weapons etc. very interesting in every single detail IMO. My favorite part of the game was probably the 0 handholding. The game gives no fucks wether you survive or die, if all your characters die you just enter spectate mode for eternity, world moves on without you. What this results in is that you may feel really bad when fucking up because YOU fucked up, but on the other hand every singular victory and achievement was all thanks to you so you get to enjoy it thoroughly. Built a town? You did that. Defeated a bandit? You did that. Made it out of slavery? All thanks to you. And so on.
What about older games like Baldurs Gate?
Only played 3.

Kenshi better

skyrim was great but as a RPG Oblivion mogs
and mechanically DS1 mogged Skyrim on its release year (both from 2011)

imo the videogame GOAT is Half-Life 1 (most ppl say 2 but I go with 1 since it started it all)
