Now it doesnt have the best story, it doesnt have the best characters, or weapons, or cities.
But there is something mystical about Skyrim. It is the most atmospheric, get-yourself-lost-in type game out there. Even in 2023.
My theory is that it has something to do with the time in which it came out. There are people who say this regardless of age or experience with video games. Kids that pick it up now get lost in it the same way I did back in 2011.
I think that 2011 was the last year that you could look around and say 'you know, this ain't too bad' for the average person despite the 2008 crash.
2012 and the hype around the mayan calendar was after that, and throughout that whole year, I think people were losing themselves into skyrim as if to say:
'this may or may not be my last year. It might be a joke, ('memes' hadnt been invented yet, only ragecomics and 'one does not simply walk into mordor' archaic memes) but it might also be true'.
After 2012 it all went down hill. Vine was invented in 2013, the prologue to Tiktok and instant videos. You had 3 years of that and then Harambe the gorilla was killed. The worlds first international meme which shook the world and prepared the stage for the trump era of instant media and memes everywhere.
Now here we are in 2023, and there are people still harping on about a video game that came out in 2011. Weird...
Almost as if that game signified the end of an era, almost as if that game signified a transition in the last decently sized (population wise) youth group in the western world, almost as if that game was the setting sun to an entire era, an entire civilisation.
Best 'video game' of all time? Debatable.
Most influential 'video game' of all time? Absolutely.
