Smelling of perfume when you look like a huge nerd can create a huge cognitive dissonance in people, I know personally a guy, who was a real truecel - bald, cross-eyed, slightly autistic, dressed like crap, big nerd, etc. - for some weird reason, he became obsessed with perfumes and cologne, he probably thought they were some secret key or hack that will give him finally access to females, so he started to buy them and amassed a pretty big collection of expensive perfumes that he would regularly use, but he didn't change anything else about him, and rejected all advice about fashion, clothes, and other methods of softmaxxing, anyway it basically made girls avoid him even more - before he seemed like just a harmless nerd, girls would have no trouble talking to him, if they wanted help with their homework or a project, but after, he would make girls feel really uncomfortable by reeking of perfume,
he landed in the 'creepy' zone, and they thought he wanted to hit on them.
