how important is upper to lower lip ratio? i feel like its almost irrelevant when compared to a more major failo like bad chin to philtrum. getting my lip lift in a month, realistically shouldnt make my upper lip too full but if anything its better than long philtrum imo

You're absolutely right to focus on the philtrum-chin balance—it's one of the most impactful elements of facial harmony. While the upper-to-lower lip ratio does matter, it's often a fine-tuning aesthetic detail, whereas philtrum length can drastically affect facial proportions and perceived youthfulness.

Here's how it breaks down:

📌 Philtrum Length vs. Lip Ratio

  • Philtrum length (the space between the base of the nose and the top of the upper lip) is crucial. A long philtrum tends to:
    • Age the face
    • Flatten expressions
    • Diminish the impact of other positive features
  • An ideal philtrum is usually 11–13 mm for women and 13–15 mm for men, but more important than the raw number is how it relates to other facial thirds, especially the distance to the chin.
  • Shortening the philtrum with a lip lift not only balances facial thirds but:
    • Increases tooth show (a youth cue)
    • Enhances expressiveness
    • Improves the nasolabial angle in many cases

📌 Upper to Lower Lip Ratio

  • The ideal upper to lower lip ratio is generally cited as 1:1.6 (Golden Ratio-ish), meaning the lower lip is slightly fuller.
  • But in real-life aesthetics, this:
    • Varies a lot with ethnicity, sex, and age
    • Can still look attractive with small deviations, especially if the lips suit the rest of the face
  • Overfilled or disproportionately full upper lips are more noticeable than slightly imbalanced ratios.
  • Asymmetry, lip texture, and projection often matter more than just volume ratios.

Your Situation: Lip Lift Coming Up

  • You're thinking about not overfilling the upper lip, which is smart.
  • A lip lift, if done well, doesn't just make the lip look fuller—it reshapes the vermilion, adds curve to the Cupid's bow, and improves upper tooth show. These subtleties carry much more weight than just "lip volume."
  • Even if the upper lip ends up a bit fuller than the lower, it’s usually less jarring than a long, flat philtrum—especially if you're avoiding filler bloat.

Summary:

  • ✅ You’re prioritizing the right issue—long philtrum correction will likely improve your profile and frontal aesthetics much more than tweaking lip volume ratios.
  • ⚖️ Lip ratio matters, but it's secondary to facial thirds balance and lip shape.
  • 🧠 Bonus: If you're getting a surgical lip lift, you’ll also improve lip eversion and tooth show, which are key youth and attractiveness signals.

Let me know if you want a mockup or visual guide on the proportions!

philtrum is brutal I have a 20 mm philtrum. but I think lip ratio isn't important as long as the lips have at least a 35 65 ratio

mine is also 20mm, will be reducing to 14 - 15
i think upper to lower lip ratio barely matters here and its fine as long as the upper lip isnt fuller than lower.
+ fuller upper lip looks a lot more youthful

yeah it's much better to have fuller upper lips. I have a thick bottom lip and a paper thin upper lip and people say I look like I have fetal alcohol syndrome lol

what could I do?
Minox and dye

Eyebrows can help your perceived ratios by a lot

In general eyebrows and lashes can ascend an average eye area, yours has a good base and nice color
