On December 24th, 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan to support the pro-Soviet government against insurgent resistance.

This invasion would strike up a conflict that lasted a decade. The Soviet Union fought the fierce Mujahideen Insurgents, who were backed by the United States and other nations during the Cold War.

The Soviet–Afghan War ended in 1989 with a costly Soviet withdrawal. The defeat weakened the USSR and played a role in its collapse.

Soviet Casualties:
(best estimate)

73,000 (dead + wounded in action)

415,000 hospitalized due to illness

13,714 Equipment lost

Afghan Pro-Soviet Government:

174,000 (dead+ wounded in action)

VS

Mujahideen Insurgents:

190,000 ( dead + wounded in action)

Afghan Civilian Casualties:

1-3 million (dead + wounded)

Around 5 million displaced

This failure in Afghanistan pushed for reforms that eventually destabilised the Soviet system itself, it’s kind of like Vietnam and America with how drawn out it was imo
