Starting a online shop with drop shipping?

Is dropshipping dead, or is it there a possible way to start a online shop without going into the risk of buying inventory for a couple thousands?
I am looking at some niche technical products on alibaba, and planning to sell them in my country. I want to test the business with dropshipping, and then later on import my own inventory.
Anyone already had success or failure with such business?

I am currently doing research on when there is "to much competition" in a market, and when its worth to compete with lower prices/better quality and so forth. Is there any economic formula or method to find out if the competition is already to strong?
In my country there is no amazon available.

A friend of mine has a shop for sleep and snoring devices since 2 years. He claimes to make decent money. Idk if its true or not, but i think he would have closed his shop already if nobody buys the stuff.
He runs google+facebook ads+seo with blog posts.
