It's men building their own prison. This type of materialism, while seeming to help people and the economy in the short run is actually incredibly destructive in the long run. Men are taught to base their whole identity off of personal success and turn life into a brutal 0 sum game. Most people simply just do not have the natural abilities for high powered careers and instead wind up working to death in abject misery. It is one of the worst forms of sexism, the implicit assumption that men have no worth other than their personal success. This is one of the reasons women cannot understand male aggression and cruelty. They do not have to live in this harsh reality and thus cannot understand how deeply it affects ones behavior.

Its absolutely brutal. The problem is technology is rapidly making this competition pointless and impossible. In only a centuries time any sort of human competition will be mostly irrelevant compared to the tireless power of machines. My hope for society is that it eventually becomes aware of this darwinian slaughterhouse that men are forced to live in and tries to do at least something about it. They made life better for women so they should at least try to do the same for men.
