How sugar affects BMPs
- High sugar = chronic low-grade inflammation: Excess sugar, especially from soft drinks and candy, can trigger inflammatory pathways.
- Inflammation inhibits BMP signaling: BMP-7 and BMP-9 work best in a healthy, low-inflammation environment. Chronic inflammation can reduce BMP activity, slowing osteoblast function.
- Insulin spikes and hormonal disruption: Very high sugar diets can affect growth hormone and IGF-1, which are key for stimulating BMPs during puberty.
2. BMPs Are Master Regulators of Bone Formation
- BMP stands for Bone Morphogenetic Protein.
- Their main job is to tell immature cells (mesenchymal stem cells) to become bone-forming cells (osteoblasts).
- Without BMPs:
- Bones wouldn’t form properly.
- Fractures wouldn’t heal efficiently.
- Growth plates wouldn’t function optimally.
Bottom Line- BMPs are essential because they are the “switches” that tell bones to grow longer and stronger.
- Without BMP signaling, bones can’t grow properly, fractures may not heal, and the skeleton would be weak.
- During puberty, BMPs are particularly important because this is the only time your growth plates are active, and they directly control how tall you’ll grow.
