“Suicide is selfish”

The idea that a person living a hell so bad that they rope which is seen a selfish move confuses me. People will say it’s selfish because it affects everybody around them, but isn’t the greater selfish move guilt tripping that person to stay alive and suffer because you still seek some sort of gratification from them? Bothers me how “it being selfish” is even a reason as to why a person shouldn’t rope.

From everything I've read on reactions to suicide, I think people in general are deeply unnerved by it because it implies that life isn't worth living, which is a devastating conclusion on existence to reach/suggest to people still immersed in the business of living. Usually when someone is talking about the suicide of someone they knew they will make some Freudian slip along the lines of
"....was all this not enough..."
or something like it
also note how when groups talk about suicide they don't try to empathize with the person who committed the act but usually they try and SEPARATE themselves from that person mentally. What you described,the "is it selfish" thing is just one aspect of this. This is then followed by assertions of the value of life in various forms, like characterizing suicide as stupid or unreasonable.
