I would really appreciate if someone tells me something about this. I literally never use sunscreen unless I am on the beach on a hot day. Should I? I live in the netherlands where we don't get much sun but I do go to Turkey often where we have fair weather.

I just use a daycream moisturizer which also cointains SPF15 sun protection most time of the year, re-apply it during the day if I go outside again. Also live in the netherlands.

Then a bigger tube of SPF20 suncreen for sunny and outdoor days that I also use for my body.

Photones are one of the main aging reasons for your skin. They give you sun damage, skin cancer and wrinkles earlier. Thats why a lot of people on here including me get sunblocker everyday to stop aging and keep good skin.

UVA + UVB

Most cheap one only have UVA. So your skin still gets fucked up by UVB.

Truck driver that had sun mostly on the left side of his face during his job (through a window nonetheless) and the effects of that:

The man, who has spent 28 years as a truck driver, has been told to start using sun cream

choose a sun cream that’s broad spectrum and a high SPF (40-60+). Apply daily to face, regardless of weather conditions

I'm type 3 phototype, I use sunscreen only when I spent at least 4 or 5 hours in the sun on summer. Usually I wear a hat beacuse I'm bald and use sunscreen on neck, face and shoulders. I tan easily but i have to go gradual. Does facial hair protect the skin from sun? My beard is always trimmed at 5 mm

Ok but wouldn't it be a bit excessive to use it every day? I don't like the idea of having to put on a cream every time I do something as natural as going out. Also, if being outside without sunscreen is so bad, then what did people back then for most of human history do? Did everyone age fast back then? Or was skin cancer a super common thin?

These are the questions I have. Obviously if it's beneficial for me I will use it, but I would really appreciate if you could find a satisfying answer to these questions.

It holds for like 6h so everytime sunlight can get you put sunscreen on. I use a transparent spray, so it takes like 3 seconds

Yes life was hard but not because of the sun.

Maybe I am overthinking this because I never use it so I am not familiar with it. I also don't have any close relatives who use it and the first time I ever saw a mention of using sunscreen everyday was in a reddit post a few years ago. So its either I've spent 15 years under a rock or using sunscreen isn't as common as it is said to be.

I don't like the oily feeling of creams. But I will look into this more.

It could also be that now I am 18 so I don't see the effects of being under the sun. I might regret not using it 30 years later.

We know that UV radiation causes skin photodamage and is responsible for the majority of extrinsic skin aging. This is unanimous medical evidence. But we need SOME sun (individual dose depends on how fair your skin is) to synthesize some vitamin D in response to UV (your ability to have high 25OHD serum levels in response to UV also depends on genetics independently of skin tone JFL). Also sun has potentially other benefits unrelated to vitamin D. But it does directly CAUSE (not correlation) skin aging

It's actually the opposite. SPF only refers to UVB protection, and most sunscreens lack adequate UVA protection.
A good UVA/UVB sunscreen a few times a day will help. Even when it's overcast out. UVA rays penetrate clouds, weather, windows, etc. I use Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence PA++++. Most american sunscreens don't have good UVA filters. If you get some online, make sure it's from an authorized retailer, because there are fakes out there.

I wish I started wearing a good sunscreen when I was like 15, srs.

Then you're almost certainly not getting the advertised SPF. I don't know about you, but I don't apply anywhere near the amount of moisturiser as I do sunscreen.
I use a transparent spray
Again, you're almost certainly not getting the advertised SPF. Sprays are great for touching up throughout the day but I really wouldn't recommend using it as your only source of sun protection.

There are plenty of non-oily options available- let me know if you need an idea of where to look.

Again, if you need some ideas of which products to look for, let me know.

I know absolutely nothing about sunscreens. I don't even know where to start looking. Can you give me some advice on that?

You're in the Netherlands yeah? Some of the French pharmacy brands might be a good option. Like La Roche Posay or Bioderma if you have access to those?
