A manic episode is a distinct period of abnormally elevated, euphoric, or irritable mood combined with excessive energy, lasting at least one week
. Key symptoms include significantly reduced need for sleep, rapid/racing thoughts, extreme distractibility, impulsive/reckless behavior, and high-intensity goal-directed activities.

Key Symptoms of a Manic Episode:
  • Mood Changes: Feeling abnormally high, euphoric, or overly happy, or experiencing extreme irritability, restlessness, or a "wired" feeling.
  • Reduced Need for Sleep: Feeling rested after only a few hours of sleep or not sleeping at all.
  • Increased Activity & Energy: Higher levels of activity at work, school, or socially, often acting out of character.
  • Racing Thoughts & Speech: Rapid, uncontrollable talking or jumping quickly between ideas.
  • Impulsivity & Risk-Taking: Engaging in reckless behaviors, such as buying sprees, sexual indiscretions, or foolish investments.
  • Grandiosity: Exaggerated self-confidence, believing one has special powers or talents.

Symptoms of a hypomanic episode
Hypomania is a period of abnormally elevated mood, increased energy, and high activity lasting at least four days
. Key symptoms include reduced need for sleep, rapid/pressured speech, racing thoughts, inflated self-esteem, extreme productivity, and risky, impulsive behaviors, often leaving the person highly functional yet noticeably changed.

Key Symptoms of Hypomania
  • Mood Changes: Feeling excessively euphoric, high, "on top of the world," or conversely, very irritable, agitated, and edgy.
  • Energy and Activity: A significant increase in energy, feeling restless, inability to sit still, and taking on many new projects or tasks.
  • Reduced Need for Sleep: Sleeping very little—perhaps only a few hours—yet waking up feeling fully rested and energized.
  • Speech and Thought: Talking excessively, very quickly, or loudly, often jumping from topic to topic (racing thoughts).
  • Cognitive and Self-View: Inflated self-esteem, grandiosity, feeling "untouchable," or having heightened creativity and sharpened senses.
  • Impulsivity and Risk-Taking: Engaging in uncharacteristic, risky behavior, such as excessive spending, sexual indiscretions, or reckless driving.
  • Distractibility: Attention is easily pulled away by unimportant or irrelevant things.
Hypomania vs. Mania
  • Severity: Hypomania is a milder form of mania; it does not usually cause severe disruption to daily life or require hospitalization.
  • Duration: Hypomania lasts at least 4 consecutive days, whereas mania lasts at least 7 days or requires hospitalization.
  • Psychosis: Hypomania does not include psychotic features (such as hallucinations or delusions). If these are present, it is mania.
Common Warning Signs
  • Increased social engagement or calling/texting many people.
  • Neglecting to eat or drink due to high activity levels.
  • Increased alcohol or drug use.
Disclaimer: If you or someone you know is experiencing these symptoms, it is important to consult a mental health professional for an accurate diagnosis, as these are often associated with bipolar II disorder.
