One could also hypothesize that states with the highest populations (CA, NY, TX, FL) also tend to be shorter, which also correlates with the fact that more populous states tend to have more ethnics.

Not surprised that those northern Midwestern states are the tallest on average. Less ethnics + Germanic ancestry, including from Scandinavian countries. There's a reason why there are so many breweries and beer manufacturers in that region of the US.

Ethnics or poorcel countries who went from no food on the table to feasting on Western diets usually experience some sort of boom in height. It's why you see so many "ZOOMER HEIGHT" meme tales coming from random shitholes that just recently had some form of dietary change. As well as second generation immigrants usually always being taller than the initial first generation only for numbers to stabilise shortly after
