Some don't suit it though. Pasty skin is bad but lighter skin can look really good, makes good contrast if paired with really dark hair

Yes, tanning was the only thing that changed in these pictures. Not angle, facial expression, distance from lens, physique etc etc.

There are exceptions of course, but in general tanmaxxing always works if you have a light pheno, and vice versa if u have a dark pheno.
