Hi guys. there seems to be some confusion around whether chewing is good or not for your facial asthetics.
luckily for yall i've done some research and have found good info;

this is a short and concise summary of how different patterns of chewing may boost or recess your skull.

1. chewing mainly with the masseters compresses the gonial angle and the zygos, causing downward pressure on the face which could promote downward growth as well as a shorter ramus and higher gonial angle.

2. whereas, chewing with the temporali does not and may lengthen the ramuses as well as promote upwards maxilla rotation. even if not, it definitely does not promote downgrowth and craniofacial recession.

This is clearly demonstrated in the sketch below (i'm quite proud of it):
Temporal vs masseter

as you can see, with temporal chewing, the force is applied in a counterclockwise direction, moving the whole face upwards and forwards,

whereas focusing on masseters cause the sides to compress together, possible contributing to recession.

so to solve this and promote forward growth, we need to follow a way of chewing promarily focusing on the temporali, and that will depend mainly on mind muscle connection and come with practice.
tips:
- chew focusing on bring the bottom premolars to the top molars in a sort of backward-upward pattern with the mandible.
- correct musculature imbalances first.
- feel the sides of your head to develop temporalis activation.
- feel your masseters and make sure they are not being overactivated when chewing.

conclusions
- while chewing will not inherently recess the face, overdoing it and especially by overworking the masseters may contribute somewhat.
- but by chewing in a temporali-favouring pattern, it may acend your skull, or at the very least, prevent it from further recession.

Hope this helped; kind regards from yours truly. By Megfish21. ;)👍

So which teeth do we chew with?

So which teeth do we chew with?
chew with the lateral and posterior teeth ie. premolars and molars since they are ment for chewing.
focus more on the motion of moving the mandible and try to follow a backward-upward pattern when biting down.

look at the sketch i put up to visualize it. remember you are trying to engage the temporalis muscles more.

We want the masseter gains tho

Can chewing affect gonion flare/eversion

this doesnt rly make sense

when you chew, you will subconsciously you chew in a normal motion

For this to work you would have to reprogram your entire chewing motion to "temporalis" chewing

And ive experimented with this and i find it hard to differentiate between chewing that engages my masseter vs chewing that engages my temporalist

When i chew, both my masseter and temporal muscles are hypertrophied

Also, i don't see how engaging the masseters would lead to recession. If massaged/relaxed properly, it would be no problem to chew while engaging the masseters
