THE BYSTANDER EFFECT
ok so you might be asking what is the bystander effect i will put it into my own words then i will let Google explain it
to me the bystander effect is when a group of people are together is removes a sense of self and you start seeing you as part of the group making action that are immoral or even inaction that are immoral ok because your simply a drop in the ocean
Google response:The bystander effect occurs when the presence of others discourages an individual from intervening in an emergency situation, against a bully, or during an assault or other crime
more on the topic
ok my response was influenced partially about some of the things i will be discussing in this thread see the truth is the title of this thread to my knowledge has no extensive research into it maybe there is but I looked at many digital databases and their content on the bystander effect and found nothing when researching for the paper I wrote but here's what the bystander effect usually is referenced in
emergencies
bullying
Serial assault
Basically the bystander effect is saying the more people who witness a situation like those listed are less likely to step in and aid
How i found out about this effect
I first found out about this bystander effect because its actually a pretty big thing in first aid and i have training in first aid basically they tell you that you need to beat it let me play out a scenario
guy is bleeding out infront of crowd
you run up and start helping him
nobody will call 911
What your supposed to do is point at someone a yell hey you red shirt call 911 right now
Breaking the sense of group by singling someone out is super effective in combating the effect
the bystander effect does not mean your selfish sometimes its confusion
Yes your heard me not helping someone who's in a emergency doesnt make you a selfish person because of a few factors
- the danger/perceived danger of a situation
If a emergency situation is dangerous you might not want to step in or if it might not seems dangerous but you see 50 people not helping you might think that its not safe
a situation you perceive as not possible for you to help or one where you wouldnt be of use
This one is kinda like the last for example if someone is trapped under something heavy or something of the sort you might think your not capable and wait for the next person who is capable to come along and save him
pluralistic ignorance
I talked about this alot in my research paper i did suppose you see a something happening and you subconsciously look around amd the fact that nobody else is reacting makes you not react out of conformity and it eases your mind knowing its ok to not intervene and if you read that and are wondering what pluralisitic ignorance means that kidna the point you look at others to see what to do is dumb but pluralistic ignorance makes you think that your thought are individual and others are thinking different thing when in reality everyone is looking at eachother to see whether to react and when none of you freak out because you dont want to see nosy or weird you all think its ok to ignore the situation meanwhile a women just got sexually assaulted in broad daylight
the origins of the bystander effect
what started the whole thing is the kitty genovese murder the story is mindblowing ill keep it really short and simple
women murder broad daylight by a knife middle of street over 40 witnesses
guess how many called for help or 911
guess

ZEROOOOOOO
yes that is perhaps the most famous and most insane case of the bystander effect
the craziest run in i have had with this phenomenon
me and my mom were driving when we passed by a man on the side of the road laying down we passed right by him didnt say a word after a few second my mom turned around and said I really dont want you to see a dead body but we have to make sure that man is OK if hes alive
we pulled up next to him my mom shouted out the window asking if he was OK he mumbled something a weakly held his hand up there was a bar right by but it was like midday we went into the bar and informed them and they called an ambulance maybe he was just drunk but still he looked dead and nobody gave a shit
stop with the fucking yap and get to it
ok ok in sorry this thread is already long and I basically haven't explained why it ties into blackpill but at the same time I have we can apply alot of principles of the bystander effect to the blackpill but modifying them some the reason they correlate so much is because bullying is referenced alot in the bystander effect and bullying based on appearance is very common and I think appearance based bullying is very easy especially when your in a crowd
things like social conformity pluralistic ignorance a mob mentality all foundation of the bystander effect show themselves in bullying and can lead to harsher and harsher shit take a random hltn average looking guy right? Well he has a big nose and some people are making fun of him for it everyone in the group is conforming to eachother and no bystander stpe in because i mean he has a big nose but them someone says his eyes are to slow together meanwhile he has a normal ipd now if the effect weren't true then someone would step in and be like bruh his eyes arent close at all but instead that guy thinks dang his eyes arent close maybe its just me let me read the room thinking his thought are unique meanwhile everyone is thinking to same thing and reading the room then nobody says anything and it keeps going
Also in the mob mentality you can claim oh everyone was doing it so its ok right?
PEOPLE THIS EVEN HAS SHOWN ITSELF IN TIKTOK COMMENT SECTIONS
Take two vids of ugly people
One comment section is full of your gorgeous your pretty all that shit YOU SEE COMMENTS LEGIT SAYING "was boutta hate but saw the comments" obv that person is saying was 80% of people were thinking going into that comment section but the first few changed the course of all the comments because nobody wanted to be the bad guy pr the different one
flip around the situation now you go into the comments and when your met with hate comments yours doesnt seem so rude anymore because everyone doing it so you insult the person
final thoughts
Ok after making this thread Im not sure how I think about it I was thinking of what I was gonna say on the treadmill earlier but its not that good I wanted to make a high effort thread but this is like my second one so here you go @Sloppyseconds inspired me to have a go at longer threads so yeah anyways I hope the thread was semi good and not too bad I hope you learned something about the bystander effect because ik the bp part is kind of water because I didnt want to repeat myself alot of it is common sense as to how it relates to bp but thanks for reading tag people who you think would like this thread and give your thoughts or criticism

this tldr was made by chatgpt btw Here’s a clean TL;DR of that thread you pasted:
---
TL;DR
Bystander Effect (explained): People are less likely to help in emergencies or step in against bullying when in groups, because responsibility feels diffused and they look to others for cues (“pluralistic ignorance”).
Examples:
First aid training teaches you to point at a specific person to break the effect (e.g., “You in the red shirt, call 911”).
Origin story: the Kitty Genovese case, where dozens witnessed a murder but no one helped.
Personal story: OP and their mom checked on a man lying by the road when no one else did.
Key reasons for inaction:
Perceived danger
Feeling incapable of helping
Social conformity / looking to others to judge the situation
Connection to “blackpill” (appearance-based social dynamics):
Bullying and appearance-shaming often follow the same group dynamics as the bystander effect.
In groups, insults escalate because no one steps in to defend, and conformity fuels mob mentality.
Online spaces (like TikTok comments) mirror this—people follow the tone of early comments (either kind or cruel).
Bottom line:
The bystander effect explains why people fail to act in emergencies and why bullying/appearance-shaming escalate in groups or online—because individuals defer to group behavior instead of stepping up
