The Curious Case of Bengalis

[Ghost Philosophy]

This is a South Asian genetic PCA plot, with a focus on specifically Indians, Sri Lankans and Bengalis. You appear here on the basis of DNA.

If you look at the picture, you will notice that Bengalis are pulled away from other Indians (especially Dravidians, since Gujaratis and Punjabis are North Indians) and Sri Lankans. This is because they have significant East Asian admixture from a Tibetan source that Indians (both South Indians and North Indians) and Sri Lankans lack.

In other words, the only reason that Bengalis aren't clustering with Indians and Sri Lankans is because they have East Asian DNA. If it weren't for that admixture, they'd cluster exactly with Indians and Sri Lankans.

Seems like they are dividing it between Sri Lankans and Tamil Sri Lankans. What ethnic group does Sri Lankan represent if they're not represented by Tamils?

Sri Lankans (as well as Tamils from Sri Lanka) seem to be pretty diverse since some samples are over the place. There's even some Lahore Punjabis that they're clustering with, lol. I believe they are Christian Punjabis who are Dravidian ethnically as well but linguistically Indo-Aryan.

Yes, but it's not only because of the coloring. I've seen Punjabis with the same coloring, in fact, some of my relatives have Dravidian coloring as well. Goes to show that phenotype =/= genotype.

I sometimes get confused for some weird mixed race mutt but I always correct them and tell them I'm from Kerala

It would be better for South Asians if they werent so mixed, then people could easily what ethnogroup commits most shoplifting, owns most gas stations/hotels, gets in by H1B or gets in illegally. Since they are mixed no one bothers to distinguish between different South Asians and they are all "Indians". Curiously, this prompts South Asians to distinguish themselves even more.

Right, it seems that Sinhalese and Tamil cluster together, along with some mainland South Indians. It kind of makes sense though since Sri Lanka as an island was probably part of the mainland but then drifted away like it happens to be the case.

These aren't "pseudo-theories" the evidence is right in front of you. You're basically Dravidian + East Asian/Tibetan. And yes, some Punjabis are genetically Dravidian as well.

Unlike Gengar I'm not gonna deny lots of Bengalis look Indian. To the average guy with untrained eye we definitely do. We look closer to them than any other race. After that the outliers in Bangladesh looks either paki, Nepali or Burmese.

Amongst Europeans there is a clear distinction between Southern, Northern and Eastern Europeans if you pay close attention. Your closest similarity is East Asians since nobody bothers to know more about them but their names are completely different as is their culture. Pakistanis names can be similar to names for Muslims in Indian Punjab. Even Hindu names from botg regions share similarity. As for phenotype everyone is mixed, its just a game of what percentage of admixture you have. Bangladeshis are fundamentally indistinguishable from Bengalis except for history and religious sentiment so there is confusion there. Sri Lankan names are different but they share the same "look" as the southernmost states of India. Nepal shares the same with Sikkim which is again a part of India. It shouldnt ve this way since India itself is more diverse but the people in there get grouped as one anyway

Neither Punjab's nor Bengalis are Dravidian despite sharing ASI ancestry. Why are you making being Dravidian like some "core" genetic feature of south Asians.

So if you removed east Asian component we would be Dravidian? That's total cope you can find many Bengalis who have sub-5% to nil east Asian they still have less ASI than Dravidians.

I'm not coping. I just can't see the point you're trying to make. By the same logic Punjab's and Pashtuns are Dravidians pulled apart by another admixture.

Personally, I can see the difference between East Asians and Africans as well. I may not be able to pinpoint them correctly, but I'm not going to say that they look alike unlike other ignorant people do. And yes, South Asia is very diverse from a genetic perspective; it's the second-most genetically diverse place, next to sub-Saharan Africa.
