My cousin was my age in the mid 80s, and worked in a traveling carnival.
He told me that the clowns, the circus actors, the game peddlers and ride operators were absolutely vial.
They were constantly doing cocaine, smoking crack, huffing paint and glew, smoking weed all day long, and told me that they even had one hitters for quick use under a table if they started sobering up.
There was a lot of gay sex with the clowns, they would be found having orgies sometimes with makeup. The smell of the clowns rvs/trailers/and tents was absolutely vial. The one he traveled in from missouri to southern arizona had a troupe of total alcoholics. These dudes would be doing acid, tripping out, and would sometimes fight eachother with knives and guns.
One tale he told me was how a female carni became the fighting point for like 5 different guys. They were all completely nude in a tent, he told me the woman was abslutely hairy as fuck and was sitting there laughing while 3 naked clowns with small dicks and two other dudes were throwing bottles, candles, food, throwing punches, and yelling at the top of their lungs.
The last thing I will mention is that they absolutely abused dogs, cats, horses, cattle, and other animals and many were covered in burns.
Children would very commonly go missing during some of these deep south carnivals. I cant even imagine the horrors they withstood.
