It probably has been old for awhile, and I am only now noticing. It has been a thing for at least 15 years. People humble bragging about being a nerd. Many of them are not particularly smart, but they look like a nerd so they try to latch onto the high IQ nerd stereotype to get some status.

Actually, Nerd is an individual that is usually academically and / or intellectually focused and knowledgeable; often neglecting social life in pursuit of knowledge.
