disclaimer: everything in this post applies unless you're chad (obviously)
Never underestimate the way people perceive you just because of shit like insta following, if a foid hears about you through common friends or maybe sees you in public but looks you up on insta and your profile has like 100 followers and 300 followed it's gonna be an instant turnoff.
She'll start wondering why you have so few followers, are you socially retarded? are you weird? don't you have friends?
Obviously insta following doesn't have anything to do with social skills (I've seen people with 1000s being retarded) but for us sub-chads it's all about first impressions.
To fix this just start spam sending requests to people you've seen irl (even if you never talked to them) and mutuals, remember that also the followers/followed ratio has to be good (ideally >1) so remove people who don't start following you back.
After a month or so of doing so you'll have reached acceptable levels (800>), trust me you'll start making a way better first impression.
