Many people on here don't talk about the determent or benefit that the temporalis muscle can really exhibit on someone's facial ratios, and perception.
Firstly, we'd have to highlight the current means of facial analysis, more specifically what facial ratios really measure.
FWHR, EME, Bi-Zygomatic - Bi-Gonial, and IPD do not fully address the impact of the temporalis due to their emphasis on the distance and proportions of facial features to one another, however what I would like to refocus this emphasis onto, is rather the "void-empty space" on your face, more specifically regions like the temporalis, Lateral Temporal. and Lateral Orbital Fat.
Usually, an enlarged temporalis causes the illusion of a close IPD, typically drastically emphasizing the bulk located laterally of the orbitals, however typically the IPD is not what the problem is. An enlarged temporalis can overweight the prominence of even the zygomatic bone; Its anatomical location on the face is rather a dilemma, as its location above and parallel with the Mandible causes many individuals to believe that that the enlarged bulk of the temporalis is due to a Narrow Palate (poor maxillary development), or at times, the lack of prevalence in the gonial region.
However, I believe that reduction of the temporalis itself, can drastically improve the pseudo-visual insecurities that can be observed, even when proportions do not adequate for.
The temporalis role in buccal movements and action, is why I personally oppose the typical procedure to "chew hard foods" for the sake of growth of the masseter, as such processes can actually lead to further facial discrepancies through the accidental over-development of the temporalis.
