How the "Mainstream" (aka The Herd) Forms Opinions
Most mainstream opinions follow two major routes:
The "Cool Person" Route (Trendsetter Route)
(Usually for music, fashion, pop culture, etc.)- A niche cool person (known only by influencers & trendsetters) discovers X.
- Niche cool person thinks X is cool.
- A popular cool person who follows the niche cool person adopts X → X becomes a trend.
- Influencers who follow the popular cool person start promoting X to stay on trend.
- Normal people who follow influencers start believing X is cool so they can seem in the know.
Example:
Think about how underground rappers, small fashion brands, or indie designers suddenly become mainstream. The right people push them up the chain.
The "Smart Person" Route
(Usually for tech, science, intellectual trends, etc.)- A smart but unknown person talks about Y on a niche forum.
- A smart known person makes a video or article about Y.
- Kinda-smart people (who are close to cool people) see it and tell them about Y.
- Cool people adopt Y.
- Influencers start pushing Y to stay relevant.
- Normal people follow influencers and start believing in Y.
