Isolation breeds a self-destructive mindset. The physical comfort, the safety, of being alone starts to become addicting, and you begin to, slowly, forget what it means to be happy. You start doubting yourself; the thoughts of self-hatred dominate, and it gradually becomes progressively more difficult to break free.
I think the best possible method of mitigating unhappiness is simply making the effort, no matter how difficult it may be, to be more social, to put yourself out there. It's healing.
