Introduction
The side profile is less important then the front profile, but its still important and there are a few Important features that make the side profile. The most important being the gonial angle, the gonial angle almost counts for 1/3 of the whole side profile harmony. This makes it more important then the nasofrontal angle that counts for 1/10, and every other ratio.
About the gonial angle
The gonial angle is the angle formed by the junction of the posterior border of the ramus and the lower border of the jaw. It represents the point where the vertical and horizontal parts of the lower jaw meet.
It is located at the gonion, which is the most outward and lower point on the angle of the jaw.
The gonial angle can be affected by the positioning of the ramus and the mandipulair plane angle.
Blue Line = positioning ramus
Red Line = mandipulair plane angle
The ideal gonial angle
The ideal gonial angle for men is about 115Β°
Every few degrees is 1 deviation from ideal. The gonial angle can become too high and too low with both being bad and giving different looks.
Too high can give a elongated lower third with a narrow and long Chin. It also ruins the shape and width of your jaw from the front profile. It also gives you a longer total face shape.
Too low can give you something called Short Face Syndrome it gives you a smaller lower third and a small Chin form the front view.
What different gonial angles look like
Ideal gonial angle
1 Deviation too low/high
2 Deviations too low/high
3 deviations too low/high
4 deviations too low/high
5 deviations too low/high
6 deviations too low/high
Fixing your gonial angle
For high gonial angles you could get a BSSO with ccw rotation without advancing the jaw.
Or you could get gonial inplants for less severe cases. Good oral posture could also help a little bit (not fixing it)
For low gonial angles you can also get a BSSO but with cw rotation no advancements. You can also remove bone from the jaw, but i only recommend it if your gonial angle is lower then 90Β°.
