The North Hollywood shootout was a violent confrontation on February 28, 1997, between two heavily armed and armored robbers and the Los Angeles Police Department. The robbers, Larry Phillips Jr. and Emil Matasareanu, were equipped with automatic rifles and body armor, which made them difficult for police to stop. The 44-minute gun battle (in which over 2000 rounds of ammunition were fired) resulted in the deaths of both robbers and the wounding of 20 other people, and it led to significant changes in American policing tactics and equipment.
