That’s a big part of it. Social maladjustment builds up over time. If there was a point in your childhood or adolescence where something caused you to experience social isolation or be outcasted, (like being ugly when you hit puberty) you will continue to grow up behind in social development. At some point you have to “catch up” and retroactively improve social skills. If This happened to you it’s very possible to improve your social skills and learn how to socialize it just takes practice.
