there's multiple reasons including the amount of testosterone, height and size usually dictate voice pitch

In our normal environment (hunter/gatherer) there was obviously lots of danger

A high pitched scream/voice can be easily heard and is mostly in prey/weaker species

on the contrary, a low pitched voice can't really be heard to an extent of a high pitched voice
