The goal of an individual is to survive and to reproduce. However, which one of these goals is always more of a priority for the individual if we compare them? The survival, of course, because you can reproduce later, but you can't survive later, if you don't survive right now. So, the first and most important goal of individual is to survive, always. Now, lets compare males and females. Males are stronger and faster compared to females so we obviously control the survival in a way. We could say to the female: "fuck you, I'm not giving you food" or "fuck you, I don't like you, I kill you". Now, female has the choice: either she dies and ends swept out of gene pool or she does everything to appeal to the male to be able to fix her most important goal, survival.
So, she had to became submissive, because she had to survive. Of course she could try to call the males bluff and tell him: "you won't kill me, you need me for reproduction", which is true, but the male could always find a new female. And also he has even another choice, which is to hurt the female physically, not to kill her or to affect her ability to reproduce, but enough to make her submit to him. So at the end of the day, she is completely independent on the male and of his approval. She had to do anything it took to survive, whether it was humiliation, complete submission or whatever. The male could always hurt her if he wanted to, even for no reason.
So the females developed traits to combat this, like submission. And other traits to appeal to the male. For example beauty and appearance. If we review females even closer, its actually crazy, how many of their traits are kinda not for themselves but for the male. Females are not independent, at all, proved by biology.
