I've realised through my own experience that if I tan I get worse looking even though being tan is supposedly ideal. The reason for this is my undertones. Yellowish-green undertones are common in certain phenotypes and they simply don't tan well. When you tan with these undertones you have an increased chance of looking ashy or Indian passing. Not to mention the sun damage that excessive tanning can cause.
