The greatest evils in the world do not come from malevolent cunning but rather ignorance applied on a large scale. The US is very powerful but it is a culture that lacks wisdom. Americans are some of the most impulsive and short-sighted people; quick to react and judge but slow to think and truly learn. This is what makes america so scary. American society is a volatile populous held together by a delicate experimental system rather than a common culture developed through centuries of trial and error like traditional nations.
The problem is what happens if that system suddenly fails? There is literally nothing stopping the US from turning into an unstoppable catastrophe. A US gone wrong would be far more dangerous than china ever could be. When China turned to shit under mao, centuries of cultural development gave people a guide on how to fix things and who to put in charge. America doesn't have any of that. If the mob were to decide to put a military dictator in charge the death spiral wouldn't end until it brought the whole world down with it.
