You're not supposed to cuss around kids, kids are sheltered from violent tv scenes, sexual scenes, etc etc.
But everyone just ends up learning about and participating in these things anyway.
Growing up with an innocent world view just makes adult life seem shit once you get there. The world seems dark and evil compared to happy days of your childhood.
My parents wouldn't let me watch violent movies or play M rated video games as a young kid/teen. All it did was hurt my social life. After school my classmates would be playing violent video games together and I wasn't there to play with them. Or at the lunch table people would talk about movies and I couldn't talk because my parents didn't let me watch them.
Then when I turned 17 I could buy M games myself and just ended up the same as everyone else. Heck, despite my parents' censorship, I ended up WORSE than the average person, saying "Go ER" and fucked up shit like that.
