There are four types of humor:
affiliative, which brings people together; self-enhancing, which helps the individual manage and make sense of difficulty circumstances; self-deprecating (self-defeating), making jokes at one’s own expense; and aggressive, making another person or entity the butt of the joke.
Affiliative and self-enhancing humor has positive benefits, aggressive humor is mixed (it can make you look like a bully), meanwhile self-deprecating humor is overwhelmingly negative and associated with low self-esteem, anxiety, depression, loneliness and bad life outcomes.
People tend to rationalize the defenses they use, rather than acknowledge problems and make concerted, organized efforts to address them–even when people ardently want to change. Self-deprecating humor becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in which the short-term emotional release from cracking a joke at our own expense may cue others to give us a wide berth, signaling negative views we hold about ourselves. While sometimes charming, self-deprecating jokes may work out well by conveying wit, humility, and self-awareness, but often they project too much doubt and insecurity, with damaging results.
(...)
While affiliative and self-enhancing humor rarely if ever backfire (unless humor is just inappropriate), self-deprecating humor is much harder to predict. Is it worth the laugh at one’s expense? If we want to cultivate a healthier, happier set of relationships with ourselves and others, we may want to reconsider what form of humor we employ.

So instead of calling yourself utter subhumans who should rope, you should use affiliative and self-enhancing humor to help you ascend. But I guess you wouldn't be utter subhumans who should rope if you wouldn't already know and practice this.

In social contexts, never. Online is different, it can be 'useful' in certain cases.

Sometimes it's necessary to play along. Sperging out over every little things that doesnt go your way is not the way to go. A little self deprecation smoothes things over. But, yeah, subhumans overdo it.

Even online it's not positive, maybe neutral at best imo.

Sure, when things go wrong, you can laugh about it. But you should never initiate jokes that are self-deprecating.

There are rare situations where self deprecating humor can be funny, but oftentimes it just awkward. There was this sub5 in my class who would constantly make self deprecating “jokes” which no one found remotely funny. It was clear he was making the jokes less out of an attempt to make people laugh and more out of an attempt to make people go “hey this guy recognizes he’s a loser, so that makes him less of a loser!” Of course people started getting annoyed at his self deprecation eventually so they kind of backfired.
