Just curious, doesn't it exist because different states have different climates therefore different voting ideas/needs?

The Electoral College exists to make sure every state has its needs heard out accordingly. Abolishing it would pretty much hand loads of power to the heavily populated states which would dictate how the smaller states run things pretty much.

I personally just like it because it overrides democracy

every 4 years they come up with a scheme to remove the electoral college, but it fails.

now you need to also keep in mind that each passing year, society becomes more degenerate. so the chances of getting rid of the electoral college is higher than it was before.

This is also why I'm not sure what will happen if they actually get rid of it. Wouldn't this just risk states trying to leave the union, possibly resulting in another civil war?

Yea, possibly. But the likelihood of that happening is probably small considering the possible economic consequences of such an action buut who knows.
