It just depends on your interpretation of how things will go. If you realize intelligence doesn't mean anything, you won't be frustrated no matter how much you improve. e.g. you accept you have complete mental blocks and will not ascend in the next month because of it, so you aren't disappointed or despair when things just stay the same. Or you realize the mental blocks are so gigantic that you have to spend 24/7 just focusing on the mental block itself to get rid of it.
