By the same method - teeth movement within bone, it also remodels itself so if you move teeth outwards outer side of alveolar bone try to compensate by thickening there and slimming at inner side (bone "follows" teeth slowly). The speed of the process and limits are individual and greatly increased by corticotomy.

If you need jaw widening you'll do it. Also he's not the only one offering it. There are cheaper options
