I am personally sick and tired of people expressing opinions about things they don't understand
JFL at those tiktokcels who think averageness and harmony is the same thing in 2025
This is obviously going to be an holy water thread if you already know the difference
But today, we'll see what is harmony (just to be sure we're talking about the same thing), what is averageness (because even this is often misunderstood) and in the end we'll see why these two words actually refers to two entirely different things , all along with exemples.
THREAD SOUNDTRACK :
Harmony in a matter of facial attractiveness refers to how the different features of your face assemble together and how much they are proportionate and balanced.
In practice, having a good harmony results in having good or ideal facial ratios which you guys already know (equal facial thirds/fifths,FWHR,midface ratio,...).
Symmetry also plays a significant role in facial harmony , however features doesn't.
You can have low or high facial harmony no matter your features. No need to have striking features to have high facial harmony blah blah blah everyone knows that but a lot of people doesn't seem to understand...
Averageness refers to the degree to which a face approximates the average features of a population.
In the context of facial attractiveness, it describes how closely a person’s facial traits align with the statistical mean of various facial characteristics.
How this plays a role in facial attractiveness ?
Well in 1878, Francis Galton conducted a study, aiming to identify common facial traits within specific social groups like criminals or soldiers. He superimposed multiple photographs of different individuals to create composite images for each of these different social groups. Surprisingly (or not), the composite images were perceived as more attractive than any of the original faces. Other studies were conducted in the 20th century, all of them led to the same conclusion.
Why ?
The explanation may be surprising but isn't complicated : average faces are easier for the brain to process, which creates a sense of visual comfort and familiarity. This unconscious preference stems from how our brains are wired to recognize and favor stimuli that are familiar or easy to interpret, making average faces more appealing on a neurological level.
This is why you probably find Brooke Shields (high averageness) more attractive than Kate Moss (very low averageness), which leads us to the point of this thread :
The two people i just mentioned have both extremely high harmony, with near 100% symmetry and a lot of ideal ratios.
However, their features are different, and Kate Moss has a few ratios that are off (IPD and ESR mostly), which lead to a unique face, often perceived as the epitome of the "model face". But it doesn't change her harmony nor the fact that you realistically can't call her ugly, even though she's isn't your dream hook-up.
Similarly, saying that "muh chico is more appealing than jordan because he has more harmony
" or "muh jordan has litterally no harmony
" makes you a complete moron, for the reasons i just explained.
Chico and Jordan both has extremely high harmony, but Chico has probably one of the best facial averageness ever recorded, whereas Jordan ,because of his stunning eye area with no UEE, extremely positively tilted eyes and his very compact midface ratio got a very unique look that you only see once in a lifetime.
Another thing completely misunderstood is that high averageness doesn't mean you're average looking.
Let's see that with exemples :
MEDIOCRE TO LOW HARMONY / MEDIOCRE TO LOW AVERAGENESS
(doesn't mean they're ugly obviously)
Hoping it is now clear for everyone
Btw it was my first thread ever so please be kind
