White single mom raising black son
I’m a white woman who has raised my dark skinned son on my own since he was born. We live in a very white area outside of Denver and he just started middle school. My son doesn’t look mixed, he looks black and he’s experiencing racism for the first time. Recently, my son told me a kid on his soccer team called him the n word. I was so disgusted, said I wanted to tell his coach but he told me he not to because it wasn’t my choice. I’m not sure what to do. I want him to be able to confide in me but I also want to stand up for him. I also feel like he laughs these comments off and doesn’t take it seriously. How should he respond? I want him to stand up for himself but I don’t want him fighting. I also understand as a 12 year old, not wanting to run to a teacher or an adult to tell on them? Advice?
