They know men are the ones watching so they want the man to get sexually/emotionally attached to the female main character and as a result enjoy the movie more since they start to actually care about the well being of a fictional character.

It's literally fucking pscyhological propaganda. A bunch of lonely men sitting in a fucking dark room with a giant lit up screen giving them the feeling of lust and love after an image of a woman none of them will ever be able to obtain.
