but he acted as if he attacks everyone to not be seen as the sole aggressor against china. now that china imposed 84% tariffs, trump imposed 125% on china. this is the trade war trump wanted. also to not be disadvantaged against china, trump just quit the tariffs for all other countries except china.
trump knows full well that china is the number 1 enemy. and thats is right. with russia he has no beef anymore.

No. Treasure yields skyrocketed and Trump blinked.

President Donald Trump announced a complete pause on all the “reciprocal” tariffs that went into effect at midnight, with the exception of China.

Tariffs on China will be increased to 125% from 104%, he said.

There's no grand design. More likely, he miscalculated by biting off more than he could chew and walked back on it.

this is absolutely true, i agree, even me at 35yo is already so bored i do everything to stop being bored

Trump just got cucked by China, after it didn't suck his dick, and was forced to "pause" the tariffs for "90 days". This man is a bluffing clown. How humiliating.

a 80yo man who is arguably more experienced than me never miscalculates. it was his plan all along. he wants the confrontation with china. the goal is to either win against china, or at the very least get favorable deals in the end for america with china.

If his plan was to fight China he should have singled them out from the start.

Everyone knows that Trump hates China so pretending he had some gripe with the rest of the world is far-fetched and actually weakens the American position.

He said this since the beginning

He wants more manufacturers to come to America and start jobs

No. Some members of the admin like Lutnik say it's about bringing American jobs back.
Others say tariffs are a negotiating tactic to lower global tariffs - which wouldn't naturally bring back American jobs.

You realize it can be both? Lmao

He used tariffs as leverage to gain stricter border security, and deportations with Mexico and Canada

The gold card program would allow wealthy foreign nationals to obtain U.S. residency and a pathway to citizenship who will invest in America businesses and create jobs

No, it logically can't. If Trump wants to bring back low skilled manufacturing jobs from Vietnam, China etc.. in textiles and other areas, the only coherent policy is large scale tariffs to eliminate any competitive advantage.

If Trump agrees to let's say to reduce tariffs on imports from Vietnam in exchange for no tariffs on US exports then it's infeasible for America to claw back these manufacturing jobs.
Vietnam will maintain a huge competive adantage in the production of shirts, fabrics, etc....

You either adopt a wholesale protectionist policy or you support full trade liberalization. Not both.

Yes but this is a separate point and Trump has overwhelming leverage here.

Yes, it logically could. It has already fucking worked lmao. El Salvador, Mexico, China where tariffs were used as leverage.

The trade deals with European and Asian countries are also just unfair.

It has not brought back manufacturing jobs on a meaningful scale.
Explain what's wrong with my reasoning. I'm not trying to catch you out or anything. I'm genuinely interested to know.

The way I see it. If you want to bring back manufacturing jobs from Vietnam for example, you have to implement crushing tariffs on imports from that country. No negotiation with Vietnam is going to change this.

There's no trade deal that's going to make children making shoes in sweat shops less competitive than doing that in America.

The Gold Card he introduced, which aims to bring in more manufacturers and create more jobs, has not been officially launched yet.

It wouldn’t make sense for there to be a large scale impact at this point, especially since the full blown tariffs were just implemented.

On April 3rd, he showcased the card and stated that it would be available to the public within two weeks.

To clarify, I am not against the idea of being back manufacturing in areas of strategic importance to the United States, like chips, military production, cars etc...

So I'm not some Never Trump idiot. I support the principle but disagree with the way it's being implemented.

Even with this Gold Card system, I don't see how Trump is going to bring back low skilled manufacturing without a sustained and comprehensive system of highly punitive tariffs against cheap foreign goods producers.

Trade liberalization (mutual reduction of tariffs) through negotiation seems to runs counter to that objective.

I.e. How is Trump going to bring back textile production, for example, if he can't ensure that kids making shirts in sweat shops is less competitive than doing it in the United States?

Child labour will always be more productive than actual pair labour. Nobody is actually punishing China for this though, yet severely punished Russia with the sanctions and tariffs.
