“Versace, H&M, i-D, Attitude magazine and various GQ magazines (British, Spanish, Chinese and Italian).” Are just some of the high profile brands that 20 year- old Tyler Maher, from Northampton, say’s he has modelled for already over the past three years, after being scouted in the summer of 2012 by PRM modelling agency.
Tyler launched his modelling career with a bang in January 2013, whilst still being in sixth form. He walked exclusively for Calvin Klein collection at Milan fashion week, after being scouted working in Hollister in Milton Keynes. Very few 17 year olds can say that this has happened to them! But do all models start out like this? Tyler said that “some models go into agency’s, some get scouted like me.” This just shows that this change of lifestyle could happen to anyone. We all have a shot at being models if we want, if it’s that easy! He admits to me that he never thought that modelling would be his life now and that he thought he would “ probably be at university at the moment.” But instead Maher gets to travel around the world, all expenses paid!
As the 6’3, bronzed titan sits in front of me on his make up chair, contrasting with the bright white lights of the photo-shoots set, I ask Maher if he could relive one day in his modelling career so far, what would it be? He answers “going to Thailand to shoot for wonderland magazine.” The modelling life really is as luxurious as it is made out to be! Maher has also travelled to many other places, his favourites including Barcelona and New York with his current agency STORM where he laughingly admits that he got to “drive around the city in a stretch limo party bus that had stripper poles with Alexandra Wang.” This job is really as crazy as it seems and there are definite perks to this job! “You get to travel to nice places and that and the money is really good.”
However, Maher say’s its not all partying and the highlife, there are also downfalls to modelling. “ Long hours and that, long days, lots of flying which makes it tiring.” But personally, I think that gets out weighed easily by everything else he describes. The fact that Maher say’s brands like “Versace and Alexandra Wang are real nice, they treat you really nice- they did everything for you, treated you proper well.” doesn’t sound like a bad job to me, beats sitting at a desk all day!
Nevertheless, with this job, looking good is essential, so I asked Maher if he ever experiences insecurities or feels the pressure of body image like female models do. He responds, “naa not really, some of us do, but I’ve never felt it, I just keep in shape as part of the job- some people feel the pressure, but I just don’t pay attention.” His response to my next question shocked me also, and started to change my view on how models saw themselves. I ask him if he saw himself as attractive. Because as a model you would think that they would be vain right? As other people clearly see them as attractive and are paying them for it! However Tyler’s response was the opposite “naa not really, I’m not really bothered about looking at the photos I’ve taken- its just work init, I’m just getting paid for it- I don’t need to know what the photos look like, as long as the brands like them.” So maybe we have got models wrong? Maybe they aren’t vain human beings that never eat; maybe they are just like anyone else just trying to do their job?
As I talk more with Maher, whilst he sits comfortably in his matching black Nike tracksuit, it seems to me that he has had a very laid back approach to his job from the start. I ask him why did he want to become a model and he say’s “I weren’t really bothered, I just thought I would meet them in London and it just went from there, I just started turning up.” Tyler seems to be just going with the flow like any other guy and is portraying British models in a good way, this could be why he continues to get a lot of work and has had a whirlwind of a career already! I tell him that I have done my research on him and he finds that weird because he “forgets that people actually see my photos, because I just see this as any other job.” This is a very modest model.
Now to help any aspiring models out there! I ask Maher if he had to learn any “tricks of the trade” or did it just come naturally to him and he say’s “naa, a few people tell you some stuff to do and then you just pick up what’s good from there- after doing it for so long, it just come natural, do you know what I mean?” so really anyone can do it! Tyler say’s that the hardest part of modelling at first was “being teased by my mates about it, but now they see that its my real job and that I’m doing really well from it, the novelty has worn off. He laughs and say’s “they just get jealous of how much female attention I get now.” However I’m sorry to tell you ladies that he has got a girlfriend, so he’s not interested in all the intention he gets! I’m sure you’ve all been dying to know if he’s available the whole way through.
“As long as the work keeps coming, I don’t see why there’s any reason to stop modelling, I just want to make the most of it whilst I can.” Maher say’s in the hopes that his career will keep going at full speed as it is now! He say’s he aspires to be on the cover of Men’s Health magazine, so maybe we will see him on it soon?
