Hello everyone,
One of the first questions people ask about hair loss (Androgenic Alopecia) is: What actually causes it?
The answer is quite simple —> it’s DHT (Dihydrotestosterone).
DHT is the hormone that helps build your genitals and other male features before and during puberty. But after puberty, it can start attacking your hair follicles, especially if you’re genetically sensitive to it. Over time, this leads to the typical pattern of hair loss we all know.
So, what can we do about it?
Sadly, not much. The options are limited and it’s kinda brutal.
Now let’s talk about the Norwood Scale — the most common system used to classify male pattern baldness. It goes from Norwood 1 (perfect hairline) to Norwood 7 (almost full baldness).
With proper DHT blockers (which I’ll list below), you can fully maintain or even restore a Norwood 1–2 hairline, and partially recover a Norwood 3–4.
So let’s start with the natural DHT blockers.
The first one is Saw Palmetto (320 mg) —> it blocks around 15% of DHT naturally.
It’s a great option for beginners or guys still in puberty.
You’ll probably still go bald if you only use Saw Palmetto, but it’s better than nothing.
The second natural DHT blocker is Pumpkin Seed Oil (400 mg).
It has some studies showing a bit of improvement in hair growth, but the results are very mild.
It doesn’t really stop DHT-related hair loss — at best it might slightly slow it down.
Still, it’s a nice cope to support scalp health and can be combined with Saw Palmetto for minimal benefit.
At least it’s safe and natural, so there’s no harm in trying.
Ok enough with the cope-tier stuff, now we’re getting into the Real stuff
The first real DHT blocker is Finasteride (1 mg).
It blocks around 70% of DHT by inhibiting the Type II 5α-reductase enzyme —> that’s the one mainly responsible for scalp and hair follicle DHT.
Finasteride is basically the standard for stopping hair loss. It won’t regrow everything, but it can freeze your Norwood and even bring some baby hairs back if you’re lucky.
I’ve been taking Finasteride myself and haven’t experienced any side effects at all.
If you’re serious about keeping your hair, Finasteride is the foundation
The next level after Fin is Dutasteride (0.5 mg) —> aka Fin on steroids.
It blocks around 90% of total DHT since it hits both Type I and Type II 5α-reductase.
Most people only jump to Dut when Fin stops working or if their hairloss is too aggressive.
It’s way stronger, but also has a slightly higher chance of sides —>so don’t start with this unless you actually need it.
Used right, Dutasteride can literally stop Norwood progression completely.
In the end, it all comes down to three things: Fin, Dut, and Minox.
Everything else is just cope
No supplement, no shampoo, no “natural blocker” is going to save your hairline.
If you’re not on at least one of these three, you’re basically just watching your Norwood progress in slow motion.
Simple truth Fin, Dut, and Minox are the only things that actually work.
Fun fact:
Around 80% of men who carry the baldness gene will experience some degree of hair loss in their lifetime.
For most, it starts in their 20s to early 30s, and by age 50, about 50% of all men show visible thinning or a receding hairline.
If you’ve got the genetics, it’s not a question of if it’s a question of when.
Goodluck.
