I smoked briefly in college, because all the cool people also smoked, they would go outside during breaks, they formed their own groups and cliques, so I would go there to smoke with them, tried to chat them only to receive short, one-word responses like "Uh-huh...", "Yeah...", "Right...", "OK...", "That's cool...", etc.
I didn't get anywhere with them, so I stopped smoking and went back to the non-smoker groups.
