My cousins have a VW golf and they seem to love it, they race them. It has pretty good fuel efficiency. If you're young the main things you should look into when looking at cars is the cost, fuel efficiency, and the maintenance. I don't know your terrain but if most of your destinations are really close and your roads and the weather ain't extreme I'd say hold off on the car and get a good bicycle. Cars are a money pit, but if you actually need one then the vw golf doesn't seem like a bad car.
