Was the joker hopeless?

If you watched the movie then you saw that he was pretty much screwed from the beginning (no father, adopted as a kid, crazy mother, abuse, head trauma, mental illness, no romantic relationships, dead end job, physically weak and bullied etc.), despite that, was there a chance for him to have been a normal person or are these circumstances enough to guarantee craziness?
