Economically or militarily, they had no massive soft power and culture dominance like America- similar to china of today, American media was consumed in Soviet Union, Sovie media was consumed nowhere. It's not true at all. Your view is extremely one sided.
USSR was second largest economy at that time. Yes it was lagging per capita but there were no poor people just as rich. Everyone had a job and somewhere to live.

USSR and USA had around the same military budget.

USSR had extreme soft power around the world starting from Africa (helping native get over colonists) to every other part of the world as communism and socialism was very popular everywhere. Even right now Russia is liked by various communist parties and people as it is perceived to be communist or for it's communist past.

American media was consumed in USSR not more than Soviet media. You know all the hunt for communists at that time? It all because of media power of USSR.

If you got couple newspapers and TV channels that work together to create a good image and good feeling for people they gonna feel good and live happily. Compared to the US where everyone talks trash over each other and other fearmongering stuff. And again they were poorer but there was no poor.
