Big social media like tiktok and Instagram provided a means of spreading 'niche' 'subcultures' and things of that nature around the world making them 'popular.' resulting in the collapse of 'subcultures' as a whole and the creation of individual 'aesthetics' that are usually an amalgamation of multiple of the most inherently popular things within the 'niche' compressed into a stereotypish, one faceted ball of nonsense. E.g (looksmaxxing on tiktok, generalization of alternative women, etc.).
On the flip side of this you have people with so much individualism, due to the unlimited amount of information on the Internet, who are virtually an abomination of hand picked things they like from what were previously 'subcultures' that they are going to be forever incapable of finding somebody who likes all the things they like and they may also find themselves alone in their real life due to the unrealized real world 'nicheness' given that they found a community for it online. E.g (This forum and the sense of community but lack of real world connection).
The latter is not anywhere near as much of a problem in my opinion but it makes everything more nuanced because for example somebody who dresses like X may like Y but you would never before have guessed them to like Y as the people who usually like Y are dressed like Z. This does provide people with more character though, as it becomes almost impossible to truly judge someone's character from appearance alone.
TLDR for all you attentionspancels; we are more disconnected than ever and social media is in large part to blame.
