What aspect ratio of a phone camera looks more accurate in selfies of how you perceive yourself?

These are the common aspect ratios available on current phones:
3:4 (default phone camera)
9:16
1:1
FULL (default whatsapp camera)

Each of them, according to my experience, portrait a different image of yourself.

In my case, I have made a comparison between 3:4 and FULL, which are the ones that offer the largest difference in zoom: 3:4 captures a large portion of the image in selfies (at arms length you can see most of your stretched arm and your shoulders are visible), while FULL only captures your face and only a portion of your shoulders.

For me, there's a world of difference between how I look in 3:4 vs FULL selfies. In one I look really bad, deformed, the facial proportions are just terrible. While in the other I look less bad, more acceptable, more like I see myself in mirrors.

So what do you guys think. Does it make a difference in how you look in pictures depending on the aspect ratio used, or you look equally handsome/ugly independent of what aspect ratio you use?

It's about focal range (distance camera - subject)

Not in this case. When I take selfies at the exact same distance from the camera (arms length), the photos look very different depending whether the aspect ratio used is 3:4 vs FULL.

aspect ratio is just the shape of the photo retard, what you need to do is use back camera and zoom in maximum to get rid of the lens distortion

You're very wrong. Aspect ratio is related to focal length. For example, in my phone, using a 3:4 with max MP aspect ratio (default), the corresponding focal length is 25mm. While when I use 3:4 (regular MP), 9:16, 1:1, or FULL, the focal length is 31mm. And it makes a world of difference. In the 25 mm there's a lot of lens distortion, it makes the face look narrower and longer. While on 31mm its much more closer to the how we see ourselves. I have tested this by asking people about this. I presented them photos of me with different AR and they said the 31mm photos looked more accurate.

It's about hardware, not software.

Usually, phones have 20-24 mm focal length, which is literally suifuel.

And you usually need dedicated Telephoto lens, not ultra-wide lens.

No idea. I use android. But check the focal length of each setting and youll find out.
i just checked for iphone 14 its 24mm, its the same for every aspect ratio tho

77 mm telephoto is supposed to be very accurate assuming the camera software doesn't have issues.

I bought Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, and it also has telephoto. Soon I will test what I look like on such images, I hope I don't look like the same way I currently look on 20 mm focal length photos taken with cheap phones with generic cameras.

Here is the difference between different focal length. But dedicated telephoto lens should make photos be even more accurate, with fewer distortions and facial features enlargements and asymmetry exaggerations.

Fuck, not even chsnging aspect ratio does anything? That sucks. On my 25mm setting I look so subhuman that if I knew I really looked like I would ann hiro ngl.

25 mm induces severe distortions, so don't get depressed over looking like a subhuman. Most likely, the photos don't represent you accurately.

The other FL available on my phone is 31mm and it does resemble how I look IRL as stated by some people Ive asked and also my own perception.

Is the difference significant?
Very much. In 25mm my nose and face in general looks longer, and my face narrower.

In 31mm its more compact, more like what I see in the mirror. One thing though is that my nose looks deviated very clearly (less than in 25mm ofc) while in person is not noticeable, as told by some friends I've asked to, and also to how I see myself in the mirror.

Short story. I went to a surgeon that does several different procedures like eyes, nose, body, etc. I asked him if it was possible to correct my deviated nose, and he stared at for a bit me like he wasn't able to see it. Then asked me to raise my head to have a good look at my nostrils, and then he realized that indeed it was slanted a bit. But then told me that it was imperceptible and that in his opinion I didnt need surgery because it would be a waste of money, as I would look pretty much the same.
